The First IATIS Regional Workshop for the Asia-Pacific region was organized by Semarang State University (UNNES) under the aegis of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS). It was held in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia from 25 to 27 March 2013. The theme of the workshop was Translation and Cultural Identity.

Conference host institution:

The workshop was hosted by the Faculty of Languages and Arts of UNNES. It proved one of the most prestigious of the series of academic programs organized to celebrate the 48^th anniversary of the university.  Colleagues of the English Department, chaired by myself, organized the workshop. In 2012, IATIS introduced a new initiative to encourage closer ties among scholars in translation and intercultural studies working within a given region: the IATIS Regional Workshops. These workshops are envisaged as events planned and organised under the aegis of IATIS to offer more frequent academic networking and exchange opportunities than the IATIS three-yearly international conferences.

These workshops are partly funded by IATIS to stimulate interaction among scholars in different geographical regions, particularly in regions where Translation Studies is still developing and gaining recognition.

The Second IATIS Regional Workshop,' Collaborative Translation: from Antiquity to the Internet/ La traduction collaborative : de l'Antiquité à Internet', June 5-7, 2014. FOURTH IATIS REGIONAL WORKSHOP: 23-24 AUGUST 2014

Despite the fact that Africa is home to at least 1300 languages, that most if not all African countries are linguistically diverse and that translation should thus be an everyday phenomenon, the field of translation studies in Africa is small, relative to other continents. At tertiary level, most of the energy is put into training translators/interpreters, and relatively little is done at the level of research into processes and products of translation. When one pages through discipline-related encyclopedias, bibliographies and readers, this trend becomes increasingly evident.
