In 2012, IATIS introduced a new initiative to encourage closer ties among scholars in translation and intercultural studies working within a given region: the IATIS Regional Workshops. These workshops are partly funded by IATIS to stimulate interaction among scholars in different geographical regions, particularly in regions where Translation Studies is still developing and gaining recognition.
The Second IATIS Regional Workshop,' Collaborative Translation: from Antiquity to the Internet/ La traduction collaborative : de l'Antiquité à Internet', June 5-7, 2014. POSTCOLONIAL TRANSLATION STUDIES AND BEYOND: RESEARCHING TRANSLATION
FOURTH IATIS REGIONAL WORKSHOP: 23-24 AUGUST 2014
UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA
Despite the fact that Africa is home to at least 1300 languages, that most if not all African countries are linguistically diverse and that translation should thus be an everyday phenomenon, the field of translation studies in Africa is small, relative to other continents. At tertiary level, most of the energy is put into training translators/interpreters, and relatively little is done at the level of research into processes and products of translation. When one pages through discipline-related encyclopedias, bibliographies and readers, this trend becomes increasingly evident.
