In recent years, neural machine translation (NMT) has become a dominant force in the field of translation, profoundly reshaping the cognitive processes of translators working in NMT-assisted translation scenarios, the didactics of translation teaching, business processes and job profiles in the translation industry as well as overall societal perceptions of the translation profession. At the same time, NMT opens up promising new avenues of research both in the pure and the applied branches of translation studies. This IATIS Training Event attempts to do justice to the multifaceted impact that NMT is having on translation theory and practice by exploring the technological foundations, practical applications and societal implications of this disruptive translation technology.
