Applications are invited for open-rank positions in the Department of English by applicants specializing in translation studies. The Department of English is a research-led department that trains graduates for careers as English-language professionals in the fields of translation, media and communication, finance and international business, and language education. Since its inception in 2008, the Department has established four undergraduate programmes of study with a concentration on applied English studies, English literature as well as translation studies. The Department also has vibrant postgraduate programmes of MA TESOL and MA Mass Media Translation. In addition to Masters programmes, the Department operates a successful research-based doctoral programme, through which the faculty supervise PhD student in their specialist areas. The Department welcomes applications from those who possess:
A PhD in translation studies or related areas (with specialty in media translation preferred);Experience in designing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate modules in translation (Chinese and English), particularly in media translation and computer-assisted translation;A growing research profile in the field of translation or related areas plus a commensurate record of research impact;Demonstrated capacity in teaching and research-related administration;The ability to teach subjects in English, which is the medium of instruction of the University.
In addition, those applicants aiming to be appointed at the Associate Professor level should be able to clearly demonstrate:
A good record of the supervision of MA or PhD candidates
Experience in curriculum development or programme management
A developing or international research profile or record of research funding
Successful candidates will be expected to teach and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate translation modules, i.e. Public Relations Translation, Audiovisual Translation, Translating Chinese Culture, Translation and Technology. An understanding of machine translation and experience in working with computer-assisted translation software such as SDL Trados, is highly desirable. The positions require fluency in both English and Chinese.
With a faculty of 17 members and a student body of over 300, studying the BA and MA programmes, the Department of English is one of the more established academic units in Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. The University is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. The University now has over 10,000 students, spreading across two adjoining campuses. The medium of instruction is English. The University aims to be research-led, and has committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus. Academic members of staff enjoy access to a wide range of electronic databases as well as print resources. The Department is housed in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building on the new South Campus, where the new Interpreting Laboratory and Translation Laboratory are located as well.
XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China, and just 25 minutes by rail from Shanghai. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP ($195 billion in 2012). The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there are a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and a great nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools.
The salary range for the positions is 19,971 – 30,701 RMB RMB/month (Lecturer), and 31,166 – 44,546 RMB/month (Associate Professor). In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses.
