Job Description
Serves as the Manager of printed publication, web content, and special projects for Hayden's Ferry Review, the graduate student-led literary journal at Arizona State University. Supports student editors in setting and managing editorial schedule and assignments to ensure publication of timely, relevant, and engaging materials consistent with established objectives. Coordinates editorial team in managing submission and publishing processes, fundraising, and outreach. May teach one class per year on topics related to editing and publishing for literary journals and/or small presses, to provide additional professional training for students working on journals and other creative writing publications at Arizona State University.
With guidance from the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing, develops and directs a special translation project: an innovative, ever-growing online archive of creative work previously published in Hayden's Ferry Review and in translation across many languages. Guides project growth with the mission of fostering and engaging an international, multi-lingual, and multicultural community of readers and writers. Builds and manages a network of translators and interns assisting with and contributing to this special project. Communicates and promotes translation project to stakeholders and the public.
Essential Duties
Leads student editorial team in planning, soliciting, managing, and coordinating regular online content and biannual printed issues for Hayden’s Ferry Review
Prepares and advises on long-term and issue-by-issue planning including editorial budget to ensure production of high quality biannual publication.
Directs development of special translation project, including soliciting involvement from translators, students, and interns
Guides contracted web developers and conducts research on current translation trends and rights.
Supports the editorial team in the development of and progress towards clear, measurable goals as a Supervisor and Mentor.
Assigns tasks and projects to student editors, interns, and assisting translators in order to meet publication goals, providing structure, guidance, and feedback as needed.
Sets deadlines consistent with production schedule.
Fosters team effectiveness by developing an environment that promotes respectful communication and a positive learning environment.
Acts to overcome issues that prevent full team participation; uses authority appropriately and equitably.
Meets regularly with the leadership team at the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing to report on progress, budgets, and outcomes.
Works closely with Piper Center marketing and program leaders in developing goals, plans, and strategies; maintains communication on style, quality, and direction of publications, to ensure consistent creative direction and implementation.
Identifies trends, anticipates and responds to project risks and results.
Provides guidance on design and publications and ensures compliance with standard policies and procedures.
Targets appropriate internal and/or external sources of support and influence to ensure optimal outcomes.
Proofreads hard and soft copy before publication.
Manages budgets and publication cycles for both the literary journal and the special translation project.
Engages team efforts to increase journal subscriptions and distribution, including targeted outreach, communications with purchasers and subscribers, and planning fundraising events and issue launches.
Supports student editorial team in coordinating with featured artists, translators, and contributing writers to meet publication needs and produce each multi-genre issue of Hayden’s Ferry Review.
Researches requirements of web content development to ensure ability to support requested web offerings, and guides contracted developers in improving website design and increasing website functionality and impact.
May edit e-newsletters, including mock up in HTML and confirming accuracy/operations of all hyperlinks for completed newsletters.
May draft articles for a variety of communication vehicles and media releases in support of organizational events and achievements.
May provide assistance in multimedia projects including production, scripting, and advising on video, podcasts, and other audio/visual projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Journalism or a field appropriate to the area of assignment and five (5) years of related experience; OR, Nine (9) years of related experience;OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
Evidence of a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing.
Work experience in a University setting, including knowledge of the educational, research, and the public service mission of a major public research university.
Experience managing teams of volunteers, student employees, and/or interns.
Experience with or demonstrated interest in translation practice and publication.
Demonstrated knowledge of project management principles, methods and techniques.
Experience conducting creative, inspirational research to discover and apply emerging academic and/or literary trends and techniques.
Experience in using various graphic arts and related software applications including Adobe Creative Suite (such as InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, etc.) and other graphic design tools.
Experience with web development.
Evidence of fluency in one or more foreign languages.
