SENIOR LECTURESHIP/LECTURESHIP IN APPLIED TRANSLATION STUDIES/INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION WITH SPANISH LANGUAGE

Applications are invited for this new post designed to further strengthen both research in the School and the existing Spanish sector. We are looking for a research appointment which combines expertise in translation studies/intercultural communication with degree level Spanish language teaching. The successful candidate will have a publication record of international quality in Applied Translation Studies/Intercultural Communication in addition to experience of capturing grant income and providing PhD supervision. In order to identify the best people with this skill set we are advertising concurrently for a Senior Lecturer (ATR4), Lecturer B (ATR3) and Lecturer A (ATR2), but only one appointment will be made.

Epistemicide! Translation and the Erosion of Knowledge

Contributions are invited for a volume on the subject of epistemicide in translation to be submitted to a reputable publisher under the auspices of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS).

With the growing dominance of English as the lingua franca of academia, there has been increased attention in recent years to the way in which translation is complicit in the destruction of non-Anglophone academic discourses through the systematic imposition of Anglo-Saxon norms. If we assume, with the Critical Discourse Analysts, that discourse is never neutral but always encodes values, beliefs and ideologies, then the transformations that are implemented in order to make texts by non-native English speaker (NNES) authors acceptable for international publication involve nothing less than the elimination of non-hegemonic forms of knowledge. Similarly, the widespread practice of calquing English structures onto target languages in the translation of textbooks and other academic works out of English seems to be contributing to the process of language change. That is to say, the academic discourses of other languages are gradually becoming "mirror images” of the dominant one (Cronin 1998), bringing inevitable results on the level of epistemological diversity.

Leadership Chair for 'Language at Leeds', University of Leeds, UK

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures is seeking an exceptional leader who combines internationally leading research and innovation with an outstanding record in student education for the position of Chair for 'Language at Leeds', as part of a £23m investment in academic leadership at the University of Leeds (see www.universityofleedschairs.co.uk )

This new appointment, located in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, will have a subject specialism in the broad field of linguistics in order to lead and develop the new Faculty-based strategic Language at Leeds initiative (see below) with the aim of building on substantial existing successes and making Leeds an international leader in language-related research, scholarship and teaching. The structures of this initiative will bring together and enhance language studies in the School (the largest of its kind in the country), in the Faculty (notably English Language) and in the wider University (including Computing and Education). Within the School, this will particularly involve staff in Linguistics & Phonetics, Translation Studies and the Language Centre.

First IATIS Regional Workshop on Translation and Cultural Identity

Translation is a complex and on-going process that requires both linguistic and cultural adaptation. Translation can challenge, shape or maintain the identity of both source and target cultures, where the translator becomes a negotiator between the two poles. The translator negotiates different challenges in order to produce translations that will be acceptable to target cultures. However, this negotiation is all the more difficult within a multilingual and multicultural context. This workshop will focus on various aspects of how translation relates to the target readers' culture, examining various aspects from the political and sociocultural to the textual and technological. The workshop will comprise parallel paper presentation sessions, plenary sessions as well as a panel discussion by keynote speakers.

Financial translators naturally need to write well, but they must also understand the trends, indicators and concepts described in the texts they deliver and connect with their readers' expectations. In today's fast-moving market, that is not always easy. Enter the SFT's Summer School for Financial Translators, a unique biennial event with speakers from the financial community, Q&A to nail down the concepts and phrasing, and networking. Sessions are presented in either English or French; given participants' professional profiles, no interpreting is provided. See details below.

The organizers have applied for ATA continuing education points, and for freelancers based in France, the event is eligible for FIF-PL funding.
